Caspar David Friedrich - Kreidefelsen auf Rügen [Chalk Cliffs on Rügen], 1819
Friedrich was the kind of painter the English Romantic poets respected. There is a romantic sensibility to his paintings and the landscape means something of itself. It becomes kind of Immanuel Kant-ish: Nature is a being onto itself. There is a world beyond that we can’t access. Now Romanticism comes into play: Nature begins to suggest that ideal of ‘the devine’, or ‘sublime’ which evades the viewer’s grasps. see: Wordsworth, Shelley.
